UK Gov Considering a Ban on Single Use Plastic Condiment Sachets

The UK Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs as laid out plans to ban single use condiment sachets and cuttlery. The new bans expand on the existing bans on single use plastic straws and cotton buds. Single use plastic sachets are hard to recycle, in part to do with the food contamination, and need to remove this prior to recycling. These kinds of plastics are most likely to go to land fill and end up in water ways.

The report concluded that single-use sauce sachets could “cause considerable harm to the marine and terrestrial environment when disposed of incorrectly”. Because of their small size and heavy contamination with food, they are hard to segregate and clean, making them unlikely to be recycled.
