Infrastructure Malta has completed half the work of the first phase of the project which will supply electricity to quays in the Grand Harbour, initially where passenger ships will moor and later on to cargo ships. Apart from cable laying, last year the agency built two stations for the conversion of electricity frequency to the vessels’ needs. These buildings, the first of their kind in Malta, will, once completed, see some 17,000 families in the Grand Harbour area benefit from 90% less air pollution, leading to less respiratory disease. In 20 years, the country will save some €375 million in costs caused by air pollution, such as the environment, health, infrastructure and agriculture.
