General Motors is getting into the home electricity business. Sort of.
Like Ford, Tesla, and Volkswagen, GM's newest EV trucks will come equipped with “bidirectional charging” which essentially means the power can go both ways: the home can charge up the EV battery when needed, and the EV battery can be used as a generator for the home if it loses electricity.
Make no mistake, these vehicles are not cheap. The GM Silverado truck with the home charging system will cost around $100,000. The Tesla Cybertruck costs similar and the Ford F-150 Lightning is slightly less. That's not exactly spare change, especially when regular EVs can cost half that.
In any case, it's a great side benefit if you're already looking to purchase an Electric truck. It might not be the right choice if you're just looking for whole home backup power.
GM’s power play starts with the 2024 Silverado EV RST, which carries a massive 200-kWh battery pack. That’s enough to power the average American home for about 5 days with 20%, 40 kWh, left to get the truck back on the road.
