£1.5m Electric Vehicle Training Centre Opens to Train Next Generation of Green Mechanics

A new £1.5 million Electric Vehicle Training Centre has opened at New College Swindon to prepare the next generation of eco-friendly mechanics. Opened by Transport Secretary and Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander, the facility will offer around 10 courses in EV technology, diagnostics, and autonomous vehicles.

The project, developed with local garages, aims to tackle the UK’s projected shortage of 29,000 qualified EV technicians by 2035.

Student ambassador Elisa, 16, said the centre is “a good place to start for sustainability,” emphasizing the importance of protecting the planet for future generations.

Mandy Buxton, head of business development at the college, said local businesses are “screaming out” for skilled EV workers, and the college hopes to lead in producing the next wave of trained technicians.

A new electric vehicle (EV) training centre has opened with bosses saying they want to train up the next generation of 'green' mechanics.
