Imagine browsing online and being able to feel a fabric, texture, or shape through your phone or tablet screen.
Researchers at Northwestern University have developed a slim wearable, called VoxeLite, that wraps around your finger and allows you to sense digital textures such as corduroy or leather, or even experience physical cues in a virtual world.
While the device is still in early stages, the implications are impressive. For example, visually impaired users could navigate apps through touch-based cues; gamers could truly “feel” virtual environments; online shoppers might “touch” products before buying.
Making the digital world more physically experiential continues to be the goal in entertainment, education, and practical daily functions.
