Feeling eco-guilty? You're not alone — But you can do something about it

I’ll be honest - I’ve felt it. That wave of “eco-guilt” when I throw away plastic packaging, forget my reusable bag, or leave a light on all night. It’s that nagging feeling that I should be doing more, even as I try to juggle everything else life throws my way.

But recently, I’ve started to shift my mindset. Instead of letting guilt take over, I’m trying to focus on progress - not perfection. And I’ve realised that small habits, repeated daily, can create real impact.

Here are five little changes I’ve made (or am working on!) that feel manageable - and meaningful:

1. I always carry a reusable water bottle

This one’s become second nature. It’s such a small thing, but knowing I’ve avoided hundreds of single-use plastic bottles over the year makes it feel like a quiet win.

2. I’m upgrading to energy-efficient choices

Having a kid means laundry is never-ending, so I went for an energy-efficient washing machine. This one wasn’t just for the environment — it made sense financially, too. And that goes for any appliance in your home. Little by little, it adds up.

3. I’ve gone (mostly) paperless

I used to print everything. Now, digital notes, e-receipts, and online invoices are the default. Less clutter on my desk - and less guilt about unnecessary paper.

4. I buy local when I can

I’ve started going to the local market more often, buying seasonal veg and supporting small growers. It’s a tiny shift, but it feels good to know where my food is coming from.

5. I unplug devices at night

Okay, this one took a while - but now I try to unplug chargers and appliances when they’re not in use. It’s a habit I’m still building, but it’s simple once you get into it.

I’m not pretending to be an eco-warrior. I still forget, slip up, and sometimes feel overwhelmed by how much needs changing. But I’ve realised that doing something is always better than nothing.

So if you’ve felt that same eco-guilt lately - I get it. But maybe today is a good day to start with just one small habit. And who knows? It might stick.

Let’s not aim for perfect. Let’s aim for better.
