When the Tartan Army Came to Town

As a New Englander, there's something special about seeing visitors experience this corner of the world through fresh eyes. Every summer, we sometimes take for granted the historic streets, waterfront views, local pubs, and sense of community that make New England unique. That's why I loved reading about the more than 30,000 Scottish supporters who descended on Boston during the FIFA World Cup and embraced everything the city had to offer.

The stories coming out of Boston weren't just about football. They were about connection. Scottish fans filled the city's streets, pubs, parks, and landmarks with music, laughter, and camaraderie, creating an atmosphere that left a lasting impression on both visitors and locals. Their enthusiasm was so infectious that local businesses struggled to keep up with demand, and city leaders publicly thanked the fans for the positive energy they brought to the region.

What stands out to me is how quickly a sporting event became a cultural exchange. Bostonians welcomed the Tartan Army, and the Scots returned the favor with their trademark warmth, humor, and passion. The result was the kind of shared experience that reminds us how travel, sport, and community can bring people together across borders. Some reports even suggest the friendship forged during the tournament may lead to a formal relationship between Boston and Glasgow.

In a world that often feels divided, it's refreshing to see thousands of people gather not because of what makes them different, but because of what they have in common: a love of celebration, community, and creating memories together. Sometimes the biggest wins happen off the field. ⚽🌎

It’s estimated that 30,000 Scottish football fans descended on the city of Boson last week, and the ensuing shenanigans have been so generational that folk songs are being written about it. The World Cup-winning friendships that developed between locals and the Scots went viral on social media throughout their stay, but it began at 6AM when a crew of lads staying in an Airbnb roused the neighbors “with the unfamiliar tone” of bagpipes.
