While heat source pumps are becoming more popular in the UK for heating homes, these typically only go down 150m into the ground. The United Downs project in Cornwall is over 5000m deep, providing increased heat that can be used for steam generated electricity. Waste heat will be used to heat local homes and businesses.
Geothermal power provides a constant source of power, helping to balance the fluctuating supply from solar and wind power.
“There are only two things we need for geothermal power generation,” says Law. “One is temperature; the other is flow of water.” It all sounds deceptively straightforward, but the project has taken over a decade to get off – or rather out of – the ground."
