First eight autism friendly spaces in Malta

Eight establishments, both private and public, have been accredited as Autism Friendly Spaces. This was the work of NGO Prisms which has urged various places to transform their space to become more sensory inclusive and train their staff to have more knowledge about autism. Statistics show that one out of every 88 people in the world is on the autism spectrum. These people experience life differently because there are certain situations which present a challenge to them. Prisms gave a certificate of quality to the first eight places which for a number of hours keep their lights dimmed, and their music and screens turned off. When it comes to the cinema, the light is not turned off completely, the theatre doors do not close, and there is no interval while the popcorn is prepared beforehand to reduce the noise level.
