El nombre de América deriva del navegante Américo Vespucio, que supuestamente fue el primer europeo en identificar el Nuevo Mundo como un continente distinto y no como parte de Asia. Sin embargo, Vespucio nunca afirmó tal cosa y en su obra se mezcla la información real presente en sus cartas con numerosas invenciones apócrifas.

Amerigo se embarcó hacia el Nuevo Mundo no solo por su pasión por la geografía, sino también para encontrar productos interesantes para el comercio.
