Tesla are due to release an update that allows users to increase the text size on the display. For many this is just something to make it a little easier to read. But for visually impaired passengers, this could be the difference between reading the screen and not.

As a visually impaired passenger, it is very frustrating to distract my wife while she is driving to set the sat nav or change the radio station. There is no way for me to operate the in-car entertainment system. It is good to see Tesla making a small step in the right direction.

I can understand car manufacturers thinking that the systems don't need to be usable by people with visual impairements, but the reality is that by making the systems more inclusive everyone will benefit. For example, if the entertainment system had a screen reader, a driver could change radio stations and hear the station they have switched to without taking their eyes off the road. That same technology would allow a visually impaired passenger to control the entertainment system.

Inclusive design benefits everyone regardless of the industry or product/ If you are involved in the provision of products or service, please take time to see how you can provide a more inclusive product or service.
