High Levels of Bias in AI Recruitment Filtering

A new study looked at bias when using AI to compare resumes to job descriptions.

  • AI Bias in Hiring: Researchers found that ChatGPT ranked resumes implying a disability lower than others.
  • Ableism in AI: The AI exhibited biases, such as claiming autistic individuals are less suited for leadership roles.
  • Mitigating Bias: Custom instructions to the AI reduced ableism, but disparities remained for certain disabilities.
  • Research Significance: Presented at the ACM Conference, the study highlights the need for fair AI in resume screening.

The research shows that AI is amplifying biases in society, not reducing bias. Now is the time to use AI to reduce bias and help society be better.

"Ranking resumes with AI is starting to proliferate, yet there's not much research behind whether it's safe and effective," said Glazko, the study's lead author. "For a disabled job seeker, there's always this question when you submit a resume of whether you should include disability credentials. I think disabled people consider that even when humans are the reviewers."
