The Paris Olympics are championing sustainability for a compelling reason: climate change is increasingly threatening athletes and their sports. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events are impacting training conditions, competition schedules, and even the health and performance of athletes.

 By promoting sustainable practices, the Paris Olympics aim to reduce their carbon footprint and set a global example. This includes using renewable energy, minimizing waste, and ensuring eco-friendly transportation and accommodation. 

These efforts not only safeguard the future of sports but also highlight the urgent need for climate action. The Paris Olympics serve as a reminder that protecting our planet is essential for the continuation and enjoyment of sports worldwide.

The heat risks and the environmental impact of major sporting events have led some people to question whether these events should be held at all. But as someone who studies sport management and sustainability in an area I coined “sport ecology,” I believe that radical approach misses the benefits, including the Olympics’ ability to promote sustainable actions to the public worldwide.
