6 Simple Ways to Make Halloween More Sustainable

Halloween is one of the most festive nights of the year but it’s also one of the most wasteful. Between single-use costumes, plastic candy wrappers, and disposable decorations, the holiday can leave a heavy footprint. With a little creativity, though, it’s easy to keep the fun while cutting down the waste.

Start by reusing or swapping costumes instead of buying new ones. A little DIY can turn last year’s outfit, or something from your closet into something new. Choose decorations made from natural or recycled materials, and save them to use again next year. When it comes to treats, opt for locally made candies or brands using recyclable packaging, and bring a reusable bag or bucket for trick-or-treating.

Small changes make a big difference. By celebrating Halloween more mindfully, we keep the spirit alive while helping protect the planet for many Halloweens to come.

Between plastic decorations, candy wrappers, and one-and-done costumes, the holiday can create some frightening amounts of waste.
