As artificial intelligence drives a surge in energy-hungry data centers, engineers are exploring an unusual solution: putting data centers inside floating offshore wind turbines.
A new type of platform would combine a large wind turbine, battery storage, and AI computing systems on a single floating structure at sea. The turbine could generate roughly 15–18 megawatts of renewable power while hosting up to about 12 megawatts of computing capacity. By placing data centers directly next to clean energy sources and using seawater for cooling, the design could reduce power costs and emissions while easing pressure on land-based grids.
The idea reflects a broader push to rethink how digital infrastructure is powered. Instead of building ever-larger data centers on land, innovators are experimenting with ways to bring computing closer to abundant renewable energy resources offshore.
If the concept proves viable, floating wind-powered data centers could represent a creative step toward meeting the world’s growing demand for both computing power and clean energy.
