The Utica Center for Development is launching an Earth Day drive focused on supporting veterans, and it’s one of those reminders that doing good doesn’t have to be complicated or flashy to matter. It just has to be intentional.
This initiative is about collecting everyday essentials for veterans in need, connecting environmental awareness with real human impact. Earth Day can sometimes feel abstract, all big ideas and global conversations, but this brings it back to something tangible. It asks a simple question: how can we take care of the planet while also taking care of each other?
What I love most is the overlap. Sustainability and service are often treated as separate lanes, but they’re deeply connected. Supporting local communities, reducing waste through donation, and showing up for people who have served are all part of the same mindset.
It also highlights something I think we forget. Impact doesn’t always come from massive programs or sweeping change. Sometimes it’s a drive, a collection, a small act that meets someone exactly where they are.
There’s something grounding about that.
If Earth Day is about leaving the world better than we found it, this feels like a pretty good place to start.
