The wellbeing benefits of a summer of sport

As the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup moves towards its highly anticipated conclusion, people in their billions are watching, discussing and connecting.

For many, it’s the highlight of a summer of sport which also includes the iconic Wimbledon Championships and Tour de France, as well as the biennial European Athletics Championships.

The good news is that this influx of high profile events could have a positive impact on the mental and social wellbeing of those who engage over the coming months.

The benefit appears to hinge on connection – a shared sense of community or common ground. Importantly, this isn't limited to watching in person, as research shows that screen-based viewers experience a similar wellbeing boost.

So, whether it's an evening in front of the football or a Saturday spent trackside, don’t feel guilty about allowing yourself the time – it might be doing you good.

“Watching sports can enhance well-being, primarily through fostering social connections and enriching emotional experiences.”
