Earlier this year, architecture students at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Normandie in Rouen took part in “Passé recomposé – Expérimenter le réemploi”, a pedagogical experiment exploring how materials from existing obsolete buildings can be reused to build new ones.
The idea is simple: materials from buildings being dismantled can become resources for new projects. Old bricks, timber, doors or other components are not necessarily waste waiting to be removed. They can become the starting point for something new.
Simple yes, but it changes the designer way of thinking.
Rather than asking, “What would be the ideal material for this project?”, the question becomes, “What materials do we already have, and what could we create with them?”
So, instead of deciding what we want to build and then looking for ways to make it more sustainable, we start by asking what already exists and what can be reused. By designing around the materials available to us, we can reduce waste before it is even created, while allowing those materials to influence what we imagine and create. Sustainability becomes not an addition to the design, but part of the creative process from the very beginning.
Another very encouraging part is who is doing the experimenting. These are students — the architects of tomorrow — learning to see constraints not as limitations, but as opportunities to design differently.
What they learn today could influence the buildings, cities and spaces they create years from now.
We often think innovation means finding something new. But sometimes the more innovative question is: what can we do differently with what we already have?
