Recent analysis estimates that undiscovered medicines in the Amazon could be worth over $200 billion (USD), representing over a quarter of the total potential drug value within global tropical forests.
Many modern medicines have origins in plants and natural compounds, and researchers believe that there is still significant untapped potential within regions yet to be fully explored.
While it’s exciting to think of the significant breakthroughs that may lie ahead – particularly in places like the Amazon, where there’s so much undiscovered biodiversity – there are also notable challenges. Deforestation, for example, has already reduced the total potential drug value of global tropical forests and continues to threaten both known and potentially undiscovered plant species and medicinal compounds.
It’s a useful reminder that scientific progress is not only about creating new technologies but protecting and conserving natural resources too.
