I was happy to read that the government has decided to keep England's national museums free for everyone, including overseas visitors.
There was much discussion about introducing charges for international visitors as museums face increasing financial pressures. While the argument may have seemed sensible on paper, I believe something valuable would have been lost.
I've written before on BBEB about the importance of art, culture and the appreciation of the extraordinary achievements of humanity. Museums are where so many of those wonders come together. They allow us to stand face-to-face with history, science, creativity and innovation, leaving us at times inspired, emotional, humbled or simply curious.
In a world where so much comes with a hefty price tag, the ability to spend time surrounded by history, art, science and human achievement without worrying about the cost is a privilege many of us probably overlook. It means that anyone can enjoy these special places, regardless of their circumstances. What relief!
Yes, museums contribute enormously to tourism and the economy. But their greatest value lies in enriching our lives, broadening our perspectives and creating moments of reflection and wonder.
Long may that continue.
Here's to generations to come being able to walk through those doors, to discover something extraordinary, for free!
