Most people view the world-famous Hollywood sign as a symbol of fame, dreams and, of course, filmmaking. But it turns out the landmark is also hiding a thriving wildlife sanctuary. Tucked into the hills of Griffith Park, the restricted area around the sign has become a refuge for animals ranging from snakes and bobcats to coyotes, hawks, and even mountain lions.
Researchers say the surrounding park serves as an important ecological corridor connecting wildlife populations across Southern California. The area's limited human activity has allowed many species to flourish in the shadow of one of the world's most recognizable landmarks. The famous mountain lion P-22 was even photographed prowling near the sign, helping make the animal a Los Angeles icon.
Today, it not only marks a part of the city, but is also a reminder that even in one of the world's largest entertainment capitals, nature is never as far away as it seems.
