A team of engineers from the University of Malta and medical professionals from Mater Dei Hospital are working on projects that will allow patient’s bones to grow back.
Research has led to the development of two medicinal projects that help patients who have lost a bone due to an accident or condition.
"For instance, when a patient loses a large part of the bone either due to cancer or because of a car accident and the bone loss is significant and can’t self-heal, then you need to insert an implant which is a scaffold… we created scaffolds that are like metal moulds and which are inserted in the place of the bone which was lost . The bone enters the scaffold and starts to corrode and you are left with the bone." Prof. Joseph Buhagiar
