An Edinburgh restaurant and takeaway has been praised for its eco-friendly new initiative to encourage customers to bring reusable containers when getting food to go.

St Andrews Restaurant & Takeaway on Portobello High Street has been causing a stir for all the right reasons - offering a five per cent discount for customers who bring their own packaging to get a takeaway.

The idea is that diners bring their own container or cup when ordering fish and chips to go to prevent the packaging going to waste.

It's actually part of a wider pilot scheme called ‘ditching disposables’ that is running across Portobello, designed to cut back on the amount of plastic entering the ocean.

The award winning diner currently gives out nearly 10,000 disposable food boxes a month, and is among local favourites such as Civerinos Slice which decided to act after continuously seeing overflowing bins with their own packaging across Portobello beach.
