A Chocolate Love A-Fair

The chocolate industry has long been in the news for their working conditions on the cocoa farms. Unfortunately, they have a reputation of using child and forced labor.

When in 2005, some journalists learned about this, they found Tony's Chocolonely and made it the company’s mission to make all chocolate 100% slave free, not just their own chocolate, but all chocolate.

In 2019, they started an initiative called Tony’s Open Chain. Tony’s Open Chain brings human rights and sustainability issues into the open so they can be solved. It offers a practical framework for fair cocoa sourcing practices following Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles: 1.) using 100% traceable cocoa beans, 2.) paying a higher price, 3.) supporting strong farmers by strengthening cooperatives, 4.) engaging in long-term direct partnerships, and 5.) focusing on cocoa quality and productivity to optimize yields.

Ben & Jerry’s has joined the initiative as the 1st ice-cream company. To celebrate their commitment, Ben & Jerry’s released a new flavor "Chocolatey Love A-Fair ice cream" with the cocoa beans sourced through Tony's Open Chain.

I think you can go to the store and get yourself a big tub, guilt-free, after all you are supporting a worthy cause!!

Ben & Jerry's has joined Tony's Open Chain as a new Mission Ally. The two companies are coming together in a joint mission to end modern slavery and child labour in the chocolate industry. It’s a match made in changemaker heaven.
