The San Diego Zoo recently celebrated the birth of a Sumatran tiger cub on August 23rd to first-time mother Jillian. This birth is crucial for the genetic diversity of the critically endangered subspecies, with only about 600 remaining in the wild. The cub and Jillian are bonding in a maternity den, and their care is part of the zoo's conservation efforts through the Species Survival Plan. This program aims to maintain a healthy population of Sumatran tigers, which face threats from habitat loss and poaching.
The smallest tiger subspecies, Sumatran tigers are extremely threatened, and are the only tiger subspecies left in the Sunda Islands, with the Bali, Bornean, and Javan tigers extinct, (though the latter may still be alive).
