A group of Icelandic architects is proposing a concept that sounds like science fiction but is rooted in a real challenge. Construction currently relies heavily on concrete and steel, two materials with significant environmental impacts. Their vision is to capture molten lava from volcanic eruptions and transform it into building components, potentially creating a more sustainable alternative.
The idea emerged after observing massive lava flows from Icelandic eruptions. The architects argue that volcanic basalt is similar in many ways to materials already used in construction and could provide vast quantities of raw material at little or no cost. In theory, a single lava flow could contain enough material to create the foundations for an entire city in a matter of weeks.
Of course, nobody is suggesting construction crews start shoveling lava anytime soon. The concept relies on advanced technologies such as robots, controlled lava channels, cooling systems, and even 3D printing to safely collect and shape molten rock. The team envisions automated machines gathering lava and directing it into factories where it could be formed into usable building products.
While the idea remains decades away from becoming reality, its supporters see it as an example of how industries may eventually rethink waste and natural resources. Instead of viewing volcanic eruptions solely as destructive events, they envision a future where some of that immense energy and material can be put to productive use, creating durable structures with a smaller environmental footprint
