Headlines can be deceiving. Even underwhelming at times. So this story (and accompanying video) you really just need to see to believe.
A US company called SpinLaunch has developed a new launchpad for rockets and satellites that doesn't require hundreds of thousands of pounds of rocket fuel to propel a device into orbit. Instead it defies gravity by using a sophisticated version of a catapult.
Essentially the machine whirls the rocket around so fast that when it finally releases it – with extreme precision and NASA-level engineering, of course – the rocket is sent hurling so fast it leaves the earth's atmosphere and settles into orbit.
Do yourself a favor and watch the 3-minute video created by SpinLaunch to see how this works. It's such a simple idea to advance one of the world's greatest engineering feats: “rocket science”.
