Jersey’s innovative approach to repurposing storm-felled trees into market benches highlights a sustainable and community-focused way to enhance public spaces. Rather than letting nature’s destruction go to waste, the initiative—led by Racc’moder and backed by the government—demonstrates how local resources can be transformed into functional, aesthetically pleasing urban fixtures.
The installation of these benches not only provides much-needed seating at the Central Market but also encourages a circular economy, reducing waste while improving the market experience. The 2022 market review identified a lack of seating as a barrier to foot traffic, and this small yet meaningful step is an example of how strategic, well-designed interventions can make a significant difference in urban environments.
Beyond practicality, the benches carry a deeper message about sustainability. By salvaging 70 tonnes of timber and investing in a mobile wood mill, Racc’moder has set a precedent for how communities can creatively reuse materials rather than relying on imports.
This is an excellent model for other cities looking to balance economic development with environmental responsibility. Repurposing storm-damaged materials into urban enhancements isn’t just smart design—it’s a way to foster resilience, sustainability, and local pride.
It hoped extra seating would encourage islanders to stay at the market for longer. Racc'moder's Xanthe Hamilton said: "The design honours the beauty of Jersey's natural resources and a sustainable approach to production, making the most of our precious resources.
