Which Countries Can Feed Themselves?

A recent study measured which countries could produce enough food, across seven key food groups, to sustain their own populations. The results showed that only Guyana could be entirely self-sufficient.

The seven key groups included fruits, dairy, meats, starchy staples, vegetables, fish, and legumes/nuts/seeds.

Only one out of every seven countries was able to be self-sufficient in five or more of the categories.

While this doesn't have immediate or urgent implications for mass food shortages around the world, it does reinforce the fact that countries need to continue to work together on global trade and economic partnerships to ensure that their residents are getting all the food and nutrition they need.

Only One Country Produces Enough Food For Its Population, Says New Study
Researchers from the University of Göttingen in Germany and the University of Edinburgh analyzed food production data from 186 countries. The findings revealed that Guyana is the only country that can be entirely self-sufficient in all seven key food groups that the study focused on.
