A recent review of tea research found that tea, especially green tea, may provide several health benefits, including supporting heart health, helping reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, certain cancers, and potentially protecting brain function as people age.
Researchers attribute many of these benefits to tea's natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
However, the study emphasized that how you drink tea matters. Freshly brewed tea appears to offer the greatest benefits, while processed options such as bottled teas and bubble teas often contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other ingredients that may reduce or outweigh tea's positive effects.
Researchers also noted concerns about contaminants such as pesticide residues, heavy metals, and microplastics, particularly for heavy long-term tea drinkers.
