Could Coconut Oil Help Fuel the Future of Aviation?

Researchers in Japan are exploring an unexpected source for sustainable aviation fuel: coconut oil. In pioneering experiments, a coconut-derived biofuel was blended with conventional kerosene and successfully tested in a micro jet engine, delivering thermal efficiency comparable to kerosene.

The production process is particularly promising because it uses discarded coconut material and operates at lower temperatures and atmospheric pressure. Tests also showed reductions of 5% to 40% in unburned hydrocarbon emissions, depending on the amount of coconut-based fuel in the blend.

There are still hurdles to overcome, particularly higher carbon monoxide emissions, but the research offers a fascinating glimpse at how waste materials could contribute to the future of sustainable aviation.
