Four years ago when we moved to the Niagara region I noticed a man going through recycling boxes on the street while out for a walk.  I approached him and asked what he was looking for and with some hesitation he said "I am just trying to make a living returning empty liquor bottles".  I pointed to our house down the street and said please come by every Sunday and we will leave a bin for you at the side of the house- asking him to do me a favor and turn the bin upside down when done so I know it was him who took them. Our neighbours after hearing the story now bring all their bottles to our house and although it does not give the best impression to passers by about our consumption habits Don the bottle man now drives a brand new pick up truck!  Our friendship has grown over the years as we learn more about each other- he recently informed me his wife had passed and that his bottle collecting helped him get out of the house and focus on other things.  He is grateful for the this small gesture and our neighbours are also relived that they can keep their blue bins manageable.
