What Your Voice Says About How Fast You're Aging

I've always heard that your voice changes as you get older. But according to this story, the way you speak might reveal a lot more than just your age. It could actually provide clues about how quickly your brain and body are aging.

Researchers analyzed the speech patterns of nearly 3,000 adults across Latin America, examining everything from speaking rate and pauses to vocabulary use and sentence structure. Using machine learning, they created a measure called a "speech age gap" that compares a person's actual age to how old they sound. People whose voices sounded older than their chronological age were more likely to show signs of accelerated biological aging and cognitive decline.

The researchers also compared speech patterns with brain scans and biological markers of aging. Individuals with larger speech age gaps tended to perform worse on memory and cognitive tests, and among people with Alzheimer's disease, older-sounding speech was linked to higher levels of a protein associated with the condition.

The most intriguing implication is that something as simple as recording your voice could someday become a low-cost way to monitor brain health and biological aging. Instead of relying solely on expensive scans or blood tests, doctors may eventually be able to detect early warning signs hidden in everyday conversation.

What you say truly isn’t as important as how you say it
