According to the Food Waste Index Report, if food loss and waste were a country, it would be the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. The report estimates that food waste from households, retail establishments and the food service industry totals 931 million tonnes each year. The Food Waste Index Report aims at supporting the goals of SDG 12.3. It does so by presenting the most comprehensive food waste data collection, analysis and modelling to date, generating a new estimate of global food waste; and publishing a methodology for countries to measure food waste, at household, food service and retail level, to track national progress towards 2030 and to report on SDG 12.3.

Several of the world’s largest food retailers and providers have signed on to a new initiative to engage their supply chains in the fight against food loss and waste. Called “10x20x30,” the initiative brings together 10 of the world’s biggest food retailers and providers to each engage with 20 of their priority suppliers to aim to halve rates of food loss and waste by 2030. 10x20x30’s founding partners are AEON, Ahold Delhaize, Carrefour, IKEA Food, Kroger, METRO AG, Pick n Pay, The Savola Group, Sodexo, Tesco, and Walmart. Technical partners include WRI (World Resources Institute), WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) and the United Nations Environment Programme.

In Turkey, Migros (the biggest retailer in Turkey) attends to this initiative with Sustainability Academy. We as Intertek Turkey a member of this organization, not only support the project with ongoing trainings to the retailer’s suppliers but also eager to involve our catering service provider to reduce food loss and start an initiative also in our company to increase awaraness about food loss. “
