Deutsche Bahn have worked with Microsoft to create a Digital Guide Dog for navigating Frankfurt train station and locate the right train door for entry.
DB and many other rail providers offer assistance in the form of a person to guide to the right platform, train, and seat. This requires booking in advance and is limited by the number of staff available. The new app provides a choice to passengers, allowing them to be more independent.
Customer workshops are held regularly to assess the needs of travelers and after one of them the idea of the Digital Guide Dog—a smartphone app that helps passengers locate the train door and more—was born. People with visual impairments helped test the app in order to further refine it. Now, the first beta version can recognize signs on the platform and communicate information about the platform number and section with the passenger.
