A number of nets have been removed from HMS Nasturtium, one of Heritage Malta’s underwater sites. The site is located about 10 kilometers off the coast of Valletta. This was done during May, January and July of this year by the Seabed Cultural Heritage Section within Heritage Malta, UCHU in collaboration with the local diving club ATLAM. Lost or abandoned fishing gear is a threat to the marine environment as it is not destroyed quickly. HMS Nasturtium was a warship built by the Royal Naval Force to search for and remove mines from the sea in World War I. On 27 April HMS Nasturtium struck a tunnel, resulting in an explosion on its right flank. The ship sank and found its place on the seabed, face up, at a depth of 67 meters.
