Today (Dec 3) marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities. First launched in 1992, the event is in its 29th year of celebration, marking nearly three decades of meaningful change for the disabled community.

In 2021, the theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities is ‘Not All Disabilities are Visible’. Some disabilities, like mental health disorders, chronic pain and fatigue, are invisible – but that does not make them any less devastating to someone’s quality of life.

As a proud member of the Valuable 500 and to show our support, Intertek in the UK teamed up with Parallel, a social enterprise aiming to support disabled people to be free to live life to the full.

To mark and celebrate this day their aim is to engage the nation with one, effortless, single act of solidarity – to buy and wear a pair of their purple socks!

Our UK colleagues are wearing their socks today to to recognise World Disability Day and show their support.

As part of Intertek’s purpose-led commitment to making the world a more inclusive place for our clients and their customers, earlier this year we launched AccessCheck, an assessment protocol which provides independent verification of the degree to which hotels, restaurants, and other participants in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry meet the accessibility needs of the disabled community.
