The Hornsea Two project to install 165 8MW Siemens wind turbines in the North Sea off the Yorkshire coast achieves first power, a major milestone as project nears completion in 2022. Orsted, the Danish energy firm behind yhe project opwerate from a base in Grimsby. Grimsby is known as the UK's Food Town and used to be the biggest fishing port in Europe.
Hornsea two will generate 1.32GW of power when in full operation. A further two projects are in the works, which will add an extra 7GWs of capacity when complete.
I have grown up in the Grimsby area and often heard of the more prosperous times of being the largest fishing port in Europe. The area had been in decline, until renewable wind energy picked up in late 2000s. Grimsby is now the operational and maintenance base for multiple wind farms in the North Sea. Grimsby is ideally located on the mouth of the humber estuary and is benefiting from being part of the largest wind farm in the world.
Patrick Harnett, programme director for Hornsea Two, said: “Achieving first power is an important milestone for the project and a proud moment for the whole team. Constructing a project of this size and scale is only possible through strong collaboration, hard work and dedication. From here, we have the finish line in sight as we install the remaining turbines and continue testing, commissioning and energising our wind farm into the new year. A huge well done to everyone who has worked through the pandemic to keep the project on track.”
