It's no secret when we grow crops we use chemicals in the form of fertilizers and pesticides which are harmful to the environment.  However, recently there have been studies to show that adding aquatic animals to rice fields could both create a sustainable ecosystem for these animals while also contributing to the growth of rice. The aquatic animals feed on the weeds that grow in the fields to help the rice grow. In addition to creating a healthy ecosystem for these animals it was found that rice yields were 8.7% to 12.1% higher in fields with aquatic animals in comparison to fields which solely grew rice. Not only does this mean farmers can sell higher yields of rice but they can also sell the animals that are grown alongside it such as turtles, carp, and crabs. The study demonstrates a win for farmers both from a sustainability perspective as well as an economic perspective. They can spend less on fertilizer and pesticides and gain more from aquatic animal and rice sales.  As the world moves towards sustainable products this seems like a promising step forward. This would help create new ecosystems, increase profits, and save space by cultivating both crops and growing aquatic animals.
