The Apple TV+ film, CODA continues to provide positive representation for deaf people. CODA is not only a great film that increases awareness of how deaf people thrive, but also included deaf talent for the roles of deaf characters.
Disability representation is key in changing perceptions, and providing role models for future generations. The success of CODA helps smash the belief in the film industry that non-disabled talent should play the roles of disabled characters.
Let's call on ever better casting, with disabled roles being played by disabled talent.
Dan Edge, who sits on the Equity diversity committee and is an accomplished actor in his own right, has said that the success of Coda and Kotsur’s win throws a bomb at the perceived industry wisdom that disabled actors are not bankable.
