On average, veterinary practices had two more clients per day in 2020 than 2019, and one more client per day in 2021 than 2020, according to a spokesman for the American Veterinary Medical Association. Visits are up 2.4% this month compared with April 2021. However, more and more veterinary professionals are leaving the field due to anxiety, stress and compassion fatigue.
“Where I’m seeing our ecosystem disrupted the most is shelters that once didn’t have an issue sourcing veterinarian talent,” Castle said said. “They just can’t find them, so the animals are really the ones that are getting the short end of that stick.”
