Apple Accessibility Game Changers in 2022

Ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple announced a range of new accessibility features coming to the iPhone and Apple Watch.

  • Door Detection - the ability for iPhones with LIDAR to detect a door and read the text on the door. Great for visually impaired users find the right door and know how to open it.
  • Live Captions - captions are provided for video streaming, Facetime calls and much more.
  • Watch Mirroring - the ability to mirror your Watch on the iPhone, allowing users to use the many accessibllity features of the iPhone to control the watch.

Apple haven't stopped there. Many games on Apple devices are built using the Unity gaming engine, the engine has some third-party accessibility plugins, but now Apple are providing the accessibility features built in. This allows game developers to create accessible games with less effort. Read more about the feature in Apple makes a game-changing accessibility move – literally, for iOS games | TechRadar

Apple is building back ever more accessible....

Door Detection is built into the Magnifier app. It can ascertain whether a door is open or closed, and if the latter, how it can be opened, as well as the user’s distance from the door, plus it can read any signs or characters on the door (like a number).
