It seems that every other artical is about ChatGPT or GPT 4 and how it will change the world. Well, this is another one, but with a focus on how the latest AI technology can help visually impaired and blind people be more independent.

The Be My Eyes app allows visually impaired users to connect to a volunteer and use their eyes. The app streams video from the camera i the phone to the volunteer and the caller can ask for guidance and ask questions. This service is already changing lives and providing assistance when needed.

Be My Eyes and Open AI have worked together to add a Virtual Volunteer to the app. A user can take a photo and then ask the app questions about the image which are answered by OpenAi's GPT 4 model.

This app is in beta and not available to try yet. It is also beneficial to remember that this is an improvement but is still extra steps a blind person takes over a sighted person when something isn't inclusive and accessible. Technology isn't a substitute for making products, services and spaces inclusive and accessible.
