A team of neuroscientists and researchers at Harvard University recently published new findings based on a tiny sample of human brain tissue less than half the size of a grain of rice.
With the help of a high-resolution electron microscope, some serious computer processing power, and artificial intelligence algorithms that reconstructed the cells and their connections in 3D, the research team was able to discover things that contradicted years of “textbook knowledge”.
Technology is enabling new discoveries about the world and everything in it every day. When it comes to understanding the human brain I feel like we're only getting started.
“The aim was to get a high resolution view of this most mysterious piece of biology that each of us carries around on our shoulders... The reason we haven’t done it before is that it is damn challenging. It really was enormously hard to do this.”
