Plastics are a global environmental problem, infiltrating even the most pristine areas, including national parks. These protected spaces, meant to preserve natural beauty and biodiversity, are increasingly threatened by plastic pollution. From litter left by visitors to microplastics carried by wind and water, the presence of plastics disrupts wildlife and tarnishes landscapes.
Addressing this issue requires stringent waste management practices within parks, public awareness campaigns, and strict regulations on single-use plastics. By promoting sustainable behaviors and implementing effective waste reduction strategies, we can protect our national parks and ensure they remain unspoiled havens for future generations.
“All told, the 23 plastic-free, bottle-free parks prevented the disposal of 2 million plastic bottles per year,” said Colleen Teubner, a litigation and policy attorney for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, or PEER.
