For years we've been told that the magic number of step is 10,000. We've heard it so many times, tracked it in various places and I'm sure at one point all said “gotta get my 10,000 steps in today.” Well, thanks to marketing, 10,000 steps was just a number we all believed in, but it turns out wasn't entirely based in science or data.

At the end of the day though, it doesn't matter if it's 6,000, 10,000 or 20,000, what is important is for all of us to get up and move.

Some helpful tips for upping your step count:

  1. Take the dog for a walk. If you don't have a dog, volunteer to walk dogs at an animal shelter
  2. Try music
  3. Include the family
  4. Walk while waiting
  5. Schedule workday walks
  6. Park farther away
  7. Take the stairs
  8. Get out and explore new places, in your neighborhood, your town, wherever
