Many of the best sustainability ideas and initiatives take money. Serious, serious amounts of money. But if they are successful they can pay for themselves many times over in the long-run.
This proposal to generate wind and solar energy in western Morocco and then send it to the UK via underwater power lines could provide clean, renewable energy to 7 million UK homes. But it will take billions of dollars to construct the cables, outfit the ships, create the energy farms, etc.
Will the government subsidize that investment? Will private equity be will to wait to get its money back? We'll find out soon enough.
A grandiose project to build a nearly 2,500-mile subsea power line would connect vast wind and solar farms in Morocco to the U.K., providing a reliable supply of electricity to meet a projected boom in demand.
