Battery-powered ships are a great idea to cut back on pollution, but fears of running out of energy while at sea may slow adoption.
That fear could subside, however, as an offshore wind energy company from Belgium has installed a charging station 29 miles off the country's coast. It holds enough energy to recharge a ship's battery and keep it moving.
If these stations were built along strategic shipping lanes they could have a significant impact on the transition from fossil-fuel powered ships to electric-powered vessels.
This groundbreaking development tackles a major challenge in the shipping industry: reducing dirty gas pollution from maintenance and transport vessels. By allowing these ships to plug directly into clean, wind-generated electricity while at sea, we're taking a huge step toward greener maritime operations.
