Olympic Villages, constructed to house athletes during the Games, often face an uncertain future once the event concludes. Some villages are repurposed effectively, transforming into residential complexes, university housing, or community spaces, contributing to urban development. For example, the Barcelona 1992 village was converted into a thriving neighborhood, while Sydney's 2000 village became a sustainable housing estate. However, not all Olympic Villages find a second life; some fall into disrepair or remain underutilized, becoming symbols of the financial and environmental challenges associated with hosting the Olympics.
With the 2024 Paris Olympic Village’s future as a mixed-use development, focus now turns to the future of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Village.
These villages have witnessed an evolution from when they started building them, so that they can be repurposed after the two-week event. These buildings started being transformed into apartments or housing complexes. They are also repurposed as dormitories for universities or student housing and sometimes converted into hotels or holiday rentals.
