Major cities in the U.S. are beginning to transition their fossil-fueled rail infrastructure with newer, more efficient, more sustainable battery-powered trains. This article highlights the roll-out in Boston with new trains being purchased and expected to be in use in 2028.
In addition to their creating less greenhouse gases, they are scheduled to run more frequently, which is sure to delight riders.
Battery-powered trains are also planned in Chicago and in Tacoma, Washington as well.
The Authority estimated that the move will save 1.6 million gallons of diesel fuel per year and prevent 17,700 tons of heat-trapping air pollution from being released. As an added bonus, the new trains, which are expected to arrive in 2028, will run every 20 minutes instead of every half hour.
